In 2009, Erwin Van Hove
(1) commissioned a
Dunhill "LC" replica
from two French pipe makers. Both of them ignored this double approach.
Pierre
Morel (Saint Claude) was
entrusted with the mission to produce a smooth version of the legendary Dunhill pipe while David Enrique
was asked to carve a sanded version.
The following enlarged pictures allow to compare on the one hand the perception of the famous shape by a pipe maker with decades of experience (Morel) with the interpretation of a carver (Enrique) of the new generation on the other hand. It should be mentioned that Pierre Morel had received carte blanche, while Enrique had to work in close consultation with the customer.
Pierre Morel’s

pipe has been carved from an old Moroccan plateau. In order to come up with this perfect shape executed in flawless briar with stunning bird’s eyes (pictures on the left) he had to carve thirteen other pipes which didn't fit to Dunhill's "LC" spirit, on his opinion. One of these "imperfect" pipes would certainly satisfy more than one amateur (picture on the right).
